Sabers Cheer Camp

Registration is open for Sabers Cheer Camp at Divine Mercy Academy this summer. Any student - girl or boy - going into kindergarten through 8th grade this fall is welcome.

Cheer camp is an opportunity to see what cheerleading is about, learn teamwork skills or find a new way to stay active.

Camp is held June 24-27 from 6-8 pm at Divine Mercy Academy gymnasium. There will be a showcase for family and friends on June 27.

Registration fee is $30 per student. Cash payments or checks made out to DMAAA are accepted. Drop off payment at the school or mail to: Divine Mercy Academy, 245 Azalea Dr., Monroeville, PA 15146.

June 21 is the last day to register. Anyone who registers by June 1 will receive a free Sabers Cheer T-shirt.

Benefit golf outing

The Donna M. Kalisek Memorial Golf Outing, which benefits the Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western Pennsylvania, will be May 18 at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club in West Deer.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Tickets are $125/$500 per foursome and include 18 holes of golf, lunch and dinner. A dinner-only option is available for $30. The day also will include a hole-in-one contest, putting contest, 50/50 drawing, basket raffle and silent auction.

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder that causes extreme muscle weakness and has no known cure.

Farmers’ market

The Monroeville Farmers’ Market will kick off its 2024 season from 9 a.m. to noon May 11 at the Monroeville Mall between Dick’s and Best Buy, 501 Mall Circle Drive.

It will take place weekly through mid-November on Saturdays.

Library programs

Here are some upcoming programs at the Monroeville Public Library.

• May 7: Free belly dance workshop with Amethyst of Pittsburgh Belly Dance, 7 p.m. The group will offer a quick summary of the history and practice of belly dancing along with a demonstration.

• May 14: Cricut introduction, 4 p.m. Learn about the capabilities of the cricut machine in the library’s maker space. The computer-driven tool can cut paper, vinyl, fabric and more. Class fee is $5, and the class is geared toward adults.

• May 15: Learn to draw zentangle, 6:30 p.m. Learn to draw zentangle, a simple technique for pattern drawing with artist Sue Schneider. To register, visit Meetup.com and register to become a member of the “Zentanglers in Pittsburgh” group. There is no cost to register.

• May 18: “Wizard of Oz” mini-tea, 10:30 a.m. Families are invited to attend a mini-tea with games, activities, crafts and treats themed around the classic children’s film. The event is geared toward children 11 years old and younger.

Rotary golf outing

Monroeville Rotary will hold its annual charity golf outing on June 10 at Edgewood Country Club. Sign-in begins at 11 a.m. and there will be a shotgun scramble start at noon.

Golfers can register in advance as individuals or as a foursome. Registration includes a golf cart, refreshments on the course, a box lunch and dinner. Non-golfers can opt for dinner only, which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Businesses and individuals are being sought for several sponsorship opportunities. Funds raised help to support local and global causes.

Scottish Heritage Sunday

Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church will hold its annual Scottish Heritage Day celebration on May 5 at 11 a.m. The worship service, run by the Rev. John Lolla Jr., will recollect the origins of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland and help to familiarize patrons with the story of the church’s foundation.

Lolla is the author of “The Creek Runs Deep,” a five-volume history of the Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek. The series can be found at the Monroeville library.

After the service, Scottish baked goods and refreshments will be available outside. Entertainment will include Scottish singers, dancers, and bagpipers.

This is an all-ages community event and is free and open to the public.

Sage’s Army fundraiser

Sage’s Army Inc., a Hempfield-based drug and alcohol abuse and prevention organization, will turn back the clock to for a fundraiser featuring a disc jockey playing 1980s music with dancing, clothes and hair styles from that decade, from 7 to 11 p.m. May 17 on the 10th floor of the Jonnet Building, 4099 William Penn Highway, Monroeville.

The tickets are $15 per person and $25 per couple. The price includes a buffet of appetizers and soda, water and coffee. Non-alcoholic mocktails will be available for an additional cost.

There will be raffles and a silent auction.
