Pittsburgh teen killed in Troy Hill shooting

A Pittsburgh teen was killed late Monday in a shooting in Troy Hill, authorities said Tuesday morning.

David Rivera, 18, was shot by an assailant at about 11:30 p.m. in the neighborhood on Pittsburgh’s North Side, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner. He died at the scene near 10 Heckelman St., a home just blocks from the Allegheny River and Herrs Island.

Pittsburgh police responded to Troy Hill at about 11:30 p.m. and found Rivera on the sidewalk in front of a house with a gunshot wound to his chest, police spokeswoman Emily Bourne said.

Officers and medics administered medical aid, but Rivera succumbed to his wounds, Bourne said. He was pronounced dead at 11:44 p.m.

Police are investigating. No arrests have been announced.

Rivera was one of several men who swarmed a homeless man in Market Square on Feb. 23 and repeatedly punched and kicked him, according to a criminal complaint.

The brutal attack, which send the man to the hospital, was captured on video at about 4 p.m. that day in the busy Downtown Pittsburgh plaza. A preliminary hearing on Rivera’s aggravated assault charge had been scheduled for May 6.

Attorney Ashley Marie Cagle, who represented Rivera in the Market Square assault case, confirmed the teen fatally shot Monday was the same man as the teen charged in the Feb. 23 assault.

She declined further comment.

The house identified by the medical examiner as the location of Rivera’s death is owned by a holding company with a commercial address in Indiana Township, real estate records in Allegheny County show. The company purchased the home, which the City of Pittsburgh previously owned, for $23,900 in December.

Rivera was not a Pittsburgh Public Schools student, spokeswoman Ebony Pugh told TribLive.
