When we think of the Civil Rights Movement, names like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X come to mind. But behind the scenes, Black women were organizing, strategizing, and leading critical efforts for justice.

  • Ella Baker - The backbone of the movement, she helped establish the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and mentored young activists.
  • Fannie Lou Hamer - A fearless voting rights activist who co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and spoke truth to power.
  • Diane Nash - A leader in the Freedom Rides and lunch counter sit-ins, she risked everything to fight segregation.

These women, and so many others, deserve recognition for their courage, intellect, and unwavering dedication to Black liberation.
