John A. Longo, 83, of Palm Harbor, FL, formerly of Greensburg, passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, at his home. He was born Oct. 8, 1940, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Aurelio and Theresa (Charletta) Longo. John began his professional broadcasting career in 1959 as a disc jockey for WTRA in Latrobe, later to become 1480 WCNS, a station he and his wife Donna would purchase 30 years later in 1989. He served in the US Army Reserves from 1960 to 1963 before resuming his career. Over his career, John worked on air as a DJ, newsman, sportscaster, commercial producer, and talk show host. He worked in sales for WIXZ in Pittsburgh, was a sales manager for WYDD, a general manager of WEDO in McKeesport, and WHJB and WOKU FM in Greensburg. In 1982, he became minority owner and general manager of 1480 WCNS and became sole owner in 1989. He later acquired WLCY LUCKY 106.3 FM in Blairsville and formed the Longo Media Group, Inc., whose stations were recognized with several awards and tributes for special programming and community service involvement. John sold the radio stations in 2014 to begin enjoying retirement with his wife, Donna and moved to Florida. Spending time with his grandchildren was his favorite pasttime. John was a member and past chairman of the board of directors of the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters and was a member and two-term president of the Pittsburgh Radio and Television Club, which honored him with the Art Stein Award for service to the industry in March 1995. He was also honored as the Pennsylvania Broadcaster of the Year in 2000. He was an avid Pittsburgh Sports fan and enjoyed working with the Pirates and the Steelers organizations professionally. His unique personality made him a favorite in the Latrobe area to serve as master of ceremonies for many events over the years. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a son, Anthony David Longo, in 2005. He is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Donna (Pugliese) Longo; two children, John Paul Longo (Shannon), and Lisa Marie Longo-Shade; six grandchildren, Aspen Cleveland (Weston), Kelsey Collier (Jack), Carson Shade, Danielle Longo, Brianna Longo, and Nicholas Longo; two sisters, Angela Longo (Cliff Lechwar) and Margaret Martorelli (Jim); three sisters-in-law, Diane Flex (Don), Doreen Quinn (Jack), and Denise Evans; and a number of nieces and nephews.
