Janet L. Keim, 89, of Scottdale, passed into her heavenly home on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024, from Frick Hospital after recently residing at Amber House, Mt. Pleasant. Janet was born on the Lake Forest Dairy Farm just west of Scottdale on Thursday, Nov. 1, 1934, to Frank Ralph and Mary Ann Lint Leighty. She grew up on the family farm doing many chores like feeding the animals, gathering eggs, tending the gardens, and mainly driving the Farmall tractor for hay making. She loved the animals, especially the puppies. Janet married her third-grade love, Richard Keim, on June 24, 1961 and welcomed their daughter, Susan Alane Keim, on Aug. 20, 1968. Janet enjoyed summer vacations in Ocean City, Md., being a Brownie Girl Scout leader, Junior Scout badge consultant and neighborhood chairman, attending Susie's school events and dance classes, and caring for their Cairn Terrier, Cara. She was a talented artist who excelled at crocheting, sewing, needlework, crafts, and cooking. Janet loved all sorts of games and continued to enjoy word search, crossword, and jigsaw puzzles at Amber House, where her room was a display of her latest creations. Janet grew up attending Zion Lutheran Church in Alverton (which had afternoon services for farmers) and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Scottdale, where she was part of Altar Guild and a Sunday School teacher. She became a member of the Scottdale Mennonite Church when she married Dick. Together they joined the Christ United Methodist Church in Scottdale where she remained quite active, especially with the United Methodist Women's Missionary Society. She and Dick also attended services and special events at Pennsville Baptist Church. Most recently, Janet became a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Scottdale, enjoying the spiritual and musical leadership of chosen family, Rev. Janet Lord, and nephew/niece, Joe and Lou Ann Leighty. A 1953 graduate of the former East Huntingdon High School, Janet played basketball and was Salutatorian and Snow Queen. She enjoyed staying in touch with her classmates by organizing EHHS '53 class reunions for nearly 70 years. She began her career as a dental assistant in October of 1953 with Wesley D. Beadling, DDS, and loved working with him for 15 years. She had a little business, "Janet Sews" until 1986 when she became office manager for Frank G. Uhrin Electric and Insulation. In 1992, she began working as a bookkeeper for Stone and Co., retiring ten years later. Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dick in 2021; parents, Frank in 1953 and Mary in 1965; baby sister, Blanche Ruth Leighty in 1921; sister, Viola Mae Leighty Brooks and her husband, William Brooks; brother, James Gilbert Leighty and his wife, Iva Mae Leighty; sisters-in-law, Erma Rose Leighty and Shirley Keim Redinger; and nephew, Shannon Redinger.
