The boiler house at the former power plant in Springdale will have to wait one more day to meet its fate.
Springdale announced the boiler house demolition, originally slated for Saturday, now is planned for Sunday at a time yet to be announced.
The delay is because inclement weather is anticipated Saturday, the borough’s notice said.
“We appreciate your understanding and flexibility in accommodating this change,” it said.
The boiler house is the last remaining building on the Porter Street site.
Property owner CPERG intended to demolish the building with explosives in September 2023, but a lawsuit filed by residents who claimed the previous implosion of the smoke stack at the site damaged their homes and endangered their health halted those plans.
Although the injunction was reversed, CPERG contracted with B&B Wrecking of Cleveland to demolish the 13-story building using a “cable pull method.”
That, officials say, will literally pull the building down in a westerly direction onto a concrete pad.
The pull itself is estimated to last only about 30 seconds. People near the site are advised to stay inside their houses during the time of the pull and up to a half-hour later.
Crews will make the pull when the wind is coming out of the north, north northeast, or north northwest at 15 mph or less.
People will be notified of the time of the pull via the borough Facebook page, website and local alert system, closer to Sunday.
Officials expect no significant amount of dust to go into the nearby neighborhood.
Anticipated traffic detours will be the same as they were for the demolition of the trestle bridge that ran over Pittsburgh Street, according to Springdale Police.
Vehicles coming from Harmar on Pittsburgh Street should turn onto Low Grade Road, left onto Pillow Avenue, left onto Hite Road, take Route 28 northbound to the Pittsburgh Mills Boulevard exit, then turn right onto Pittsburgh Mills Boulevard, left onto Tawney Run Road, right onto Riddle Run and follow Riddle Run Road back to Pittsburgh Street.
Vehicles coming from Tarentum should take the same detour in the opposite direction.
