Dewey T. Chauvin, 95, of West Deer, passed away peacefully, at his residence, Saturday, June 15, 2024. Dewey was born in Pittsburgh on March 25, 1929, the son of the late Dewey J. Chauvin and Katarzyna Kowal Chauvin. After the death of his mother at the age of seven, he, his brother, and sister were moved to St. Paul's Orphanage, and he then went on to St. Joseph's Protectory for Homeless Boys. In 1945, while in Central Catholic, Dewey followed his older brother to join the Navy. Unfortunately, he was too young, and the Navy also rejected him due to his colorblindness. The next year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. He attended Carnegie Tech after an honorable discharge, was recalled back to the Army, and upon discharge completed a degree in commercial radio and electronics from Penn Technical Institute. Dewey then became an instructor for Penn Tech, where he worked, retiring nearly 40 years later. In 1956, Dewey and Nancy (Stridinger) were married, having four children (Dewey A., John, Paul, and Valerie). Dewey and Nancy moved to West Deer Township, and he was a devoted husband and father, coaching and helping his kids in academics, baseball, basketball, and soccer, and inspiring them to all graduate college. Dewey had many interests; he operated amateur radio (W3VYK), was an avid reader, gardener, and home chef. He was a foodie before being a foodie was hip and an enthusiast of Cajun food and history, inspired by his father's Louisiana heritage. He enjoyed watching the Steelers and Pirates and attended many Penguins games since the early 1970s, but most of all, he loved his family. Dewey is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Nancy; children, Dewey A., Paul, John (Jennifer), and Valerie (Scott) Smith; grandchildren, Taylor, Brady, Lucas, and Olivia. He is also survived by his sister, Aline Johnson; and his many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son; and brother, Anatole Chauvin. Dewey will be greatly missed by all who loved him. A Christian Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Our Lady of the Lakes, St. Victors Campus, with Rev. James P. Holland. Dewey was laid to rest at Lakewood Memorial Gardens, Indiana Township. Funeral arrangements were in the care of ADAM SIEMIANOWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 179 Starr Road, Russellton, West Deer Township.
