Kate Friday will be coming back for a second season with the Pittsburgh Riveters.
The team recently announced Friday, a Fox Chapel graduate, will be back to build on the pre-professional team’s success during their first season in the USL-W.
Friday, who plays for Florida Gulf Coast University, appeared in nine matches during the Riveters’ first season. She started for the Riveters during their first playoff game last July against Minnesota Aurora FC. The Riveters lost the match 2-0 in front of a crowd of 4,200 July 4 at Highmark Stadium.
Friday’s return was announced alongside the announcement that Lucia Wells, Minah Syam and Lola Abraham would also return.
Wells (North Allegheny), Syam (Avonworth) and Abraham (Riverview) also have WPIAL roots.
“We are delighted to welcome back four more excellent players to the Riveters for the 2026 season,” coach Scott Gibson said in a news release. “The experience that Lucia, Kate and Minah got this past season will provide them with a platform to provide an even greater impact next season, while Lola will be like a new signing and will bring an immediate impact to the team. We are very familiar with the character and leadership that they will bring as each of them came through the RDA system.”
Fox Chapel boys fall
The Fox Chapel boys soccer team defended its WPIAL Class 4A crown and found success in the first round of the state playoffs. But the quarterfinals proved to be a major hurdle for Fox Chapel.
The Foxes (18-2) lost to Abington, 2-0, on Nov. 8 at Chambersburg High School. The Ghosts were able to trip up Fox Chapel thanks to second-half goals from Christian Hinkle and Jaza Vasquez.
Matthews signs
Fox Chapel senior Brady Matthews will be continuing his lacrosse career at Seton Hill. Matthews, who is a two-way midfielder for the lacrosse team, helped the Foxes to a 10-5 record last season.
Matthews also plays keeper for the Fox Chapel soccer team.
Fox Chapel claws back
The Fox Chapel hockey team opened the season by losing four of its first five games. But Fox Chapel has started to gain some traction in PIHL Class 3A competition. The Foxes have collected wins over South Fayette and Franklin Regional to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Most recently, Tucker Cullen completed a hat trick by scoring an overtime winner to help the Foxes beat Franklin Regional, 5-4. Niko Vavpetic and Spencer Goehring also scored for the Foxes.
Fox Chapel also beat South Fayette, 5-2.
