Shirley A. (Troutman) Covey-Bigenho, 84, of Markle, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Born Dec. 7, 1939, in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of the late Adam K. Troutman and Esther E. (Palmer) Troutman. Shirley was raised on a farm located on Chestnut 'Troutman' Hill in Markle and was a 1957 graduate of New Kensington High School. She was a proud homemaker, and lifelong member of Pine Run Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Markle, where Shirley served as a youth group leader with late husband Herb, organized the 'Wednesday Evening' After School program, and ran the kitchen for years at the annual Pine Run Craft Festival. Shirley's service to her community was unparalleled. She coached girls' softball for Allegheny Township, delivered Meals On Wheels, and volunteered at the former Citizens General Hospital. She was also a member of the Salvation Army in New Kensington, a local woman's bowling league, organized a 500 Bid Woman's Card Club, which ran from 1996, to present, and was a talented quilter as member of the Peace and Happiness Quilt Club. Shirley was also Queen of the local Red Hat Society for nearly a decade, organizing creative trips for the members allowing them to experience statewide attractions. She singlehandedly collected, cleaned, and delivered over 700 suitcases to orphanages and foster care homes for children to use, as Shirley was appalled that the young ones carried their belongings in garbage bags. She was a passionate glass collector, locally recognized for her hobby of privy digging antique bottles and glass. Shirley enjoyed camping and fishing with late husband Herb, and after his passing, hunted successfully, bagging six bucks including two nine-point bucks, most recently in 2019 and 2021. She loved traveling, venturing to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and throughout the continental United States. Shirley's service to her family was strong as well, as she is described as the best mom ever. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Herbert N. Covey Jr., who passed away in 1996; second husband, David Bigenho, who passed away in 2010; and her sister, Barbara Powell. Shirley is survived by her companion, Tom Beers; children, Herb (Debbie) Covey III, Kimberly (George) Spiering III, Ken (Michele) Covey, Marcie (Paul) Leo; grandchildren, Jessica (Justin) Butz, Herb N.
