Dr. Gurmit Singh M.D., age 69, passed away peacefully at St. Margaret Hospital surrounded by family on Wednesday, April 18, 2024, after courageously battling cancer for 9 years. He was born on August 13, 1954, to Dr. Sarjit Singh and Gian Kaur Singh in Punjab, India. He grew up in Clarion, Pennsylvania. He attended Carnegie Mellon University, Penn State and ultimately graduated from Clarion University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He attended medical school at Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar, India, where he received his M.D. degree in 1982. After passing his U.S. board medical examinations, he completed his residency in Family Practice Medicine at Franklin Hospital in Franklin, Pennsylvania. He practiced in Washington and Allegheny counties, with the majority of his career spent serving the North Hills community in both inpatient/outpatient care at Passavant Hospital. He dedicated his life to caring for his patients. He remained in practice for 37 years and was well-loved and respected by his patients and colleagues alike. He enjoyed playing his guitars, was a motorcycle enthusiast, loved his dog, was an avid traveler and a loyal Pittsburgh sports fan. Gurmit was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Sarjit Singh and Gian Kaur Singh. He is survived by brothers Dr. Daljit Singh, M.D. of Fox Chapel (his wife Dr. Nina Singh M.D.), Dr. Jaspaal Singh M.D. of Ross, nieces Simi Singh (her husband Alex Beck) and Pamela Singh, great nieces Harper and Noelle Beck, and longtime companion, Diane Kaleugher. The family would like to express gratitude to the colleagues and physicians who took care of Gurmit throughout his prolonged illness. Family and friends will be received at THOMAS M.
