Robert Edward (Bob) Shaffer, 96, of Ligonier, died Tuesday, April 16, 2024, in Concordia at Bethlen. He was born December 12, 1927, in Ligonier the son of the late Charles Edward Shaffer and Hazel Elizabeth (Campbell) Shaffer. He was a lifelong member of Pioneer Presbyterian Church and a retired mechanic from Latrobe Stone Quarry, previously employed by Arch Sweeney Construction and was a member of Ligonier Valley Railroad Association. Bob is survived by his wife of 67 years, (married July 12, 1956) Irma L. (Geary) Shaffer; daughter, Lois J and Daniel H. Moore III of Ligonier, a son James Robert Shaffer and Angelina Shaffer of Colorado Springs, CO; a son, Thomas William Shaffer of Pittsburgh; grandsons, Steven and wife, Rebecca Shaffer of Colorado Springs, CO, Michael Shaffer of Ashburn, VA and Scott Shaffer of Salt Lake City, UT; great-grandsons, Colton, William and Benjamin Shaffer of Colorado Springs, CO; a niece, Joan Shaffer and husband, Al Nakanishi of St. Louis, MO; and nephew, Greg Shaffer and his wife, Judy Huddleston of Chandler, AZ; in addition to many cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Milton Shaffer; sister-in-law, Francis (Hauger) Shaffer; grandson, Emmett Richard (Richie) Lackey; and son-in-law, David Lee Sell. Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and devoted Christian. His retirement hobby was making wrought iron railing, which can be seen around the valley. He loved his fishing trips to Canada and Alaska and fulfilled a life- long dream of driving the Alaskan Highway. He made several trips to Jamaica to a deaf institute, volunteering his time and skills to make their lives and homes a better place to live. Friends will be received Sunday from 2-6 p.m. in the MCCABE FUNERAL HOME, 144 East Main Street, Ligonier. His funeral service will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the Pioneer Presbyterian Church, Ligonier.
