The armed man who Pittsburgh police fatally shot after they were threatened in the city’s Hill District on Wednesday evening has been identified.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man Thursday as Maurice Jones, 33, of the Terrace Village section of Pittsburgh’s Hill District.
Officers were dispatched shortly after 5 p.m. to the 100 block of Hyman Place after a security guard on routine patrol of apartments in the area encountered a man with a gun, according to Allegheny County Police.
The man, identified Thursday as Jones, reportedly pointed the gun at the guard and fled.
Police said officers later encountered Jones on Bentley and Devilliers streets and started a foot pursuit.
Jones emerged from behind a dumpster around 5:22 p.m. and refused to obey officers’ repeated commands to drop the gun, according to a police report.
Jones approached police and was shot.
Police said they rendered aid to Jones, who was taken to an area hospital where he later died.
The incident remains under investigation by Allegheny County Police. The status of the officer involved will be determined by Pittsburgh police in accordance with their policies and procedures.
Pittsburgh Public Safety officials said that no police officers were harmed. They deferred questions to county police.
