PennDOT has closed a stretch of South Braddock Avenue in Swissvale — a key detour route during the Parkway East closure — following a water main break.
South Braddock Avenue is closed in both directions between Roslyn Street and Woodstock Avenue until further notice.
PennDOT recommends commuters follow a detour via Braddock Avenue, Electric Avenue, Ardmore Boulevard and I-376. Commuters should expect additional delays, the agency said.
South Braddock Avenue has been a major part of PennDOT’s local detour route during the Commercial Street Bridge replacement project. Drivers had taken the road across the Rankin Bridge and into Homestead before returning across the Monongahela River on the Homestead Grays Bridge.
Commuters can also follow an interstate detour via Penn Avenue and Fifth Avenue through the East End.
PennDOT expects to demolish the bridge with explosives between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday. The new bridge is slated to open to traffic on Aug. 3.
