Police ordered students Thursday morning to evacuate a Pittsburgh elementary school after reports of a suspicious man walking on and around school grounds.

Pittsburgh Carmalt PreK-8, which is located in the city’s Overbrook neighborhood, went into full lockdown and remained “an active scene” as of 11 a.m., Pittsburgh police Chief Larry Scirotto said.

Officers combed the building but did not find anyone matching the vague description of the suspect.

Police do not believe that an unauthorized person got inside the school, the chief said.

Pittsburgh Public Schools said school will be in session Friday.

Ebony Pugh, the district’s spokeswoman, said the report about a suspicious person came from a staff member.

Carmalt will operate in a “secure mode,” meaning no one will be allowed in or out without a scheduled appointment, according to Pugh.

Pittsburgh police will be on hand to assist school police, she said.

The incident at Carmalt was the latest in a recent wave of security issues affecting local schools.

Several Southwestern Pennsylvania school districts were hit with falsely reported threats on Wednesday, that led to some closures and increased security.

Those incidents followed a school shooting in Georgia last week, where four people were killed and nine other people were injured.
