Garden City Food Pantry in Monroeville is hosting an open house Nov. 17 to showcase its new community refrigerator.

Located next to Fire Company No. 6, the site is at 500 Laurel Drive also is home to Garden City United Methodist Church.

The indoor food pantry is open the second Thursday of every month from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m.

The community fridge โ€“ located in an outbuilding adjacent to the pantry โ€“ will be open at all times to anyone in need. The enclosure will keep the equipment clean and out of the weather and ensure food is kept safe.

There is a freezer, refrigerator and dry goods shelf inside the shed, which will be stocked with fresh produce, eggs and dairy products, tuna and prepared canned meals and meats.

Nonperishable foods and personal care items will be available, but will vary based on accessibility.

โ€œIt will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,โ€ Garden City Food Pantry President Kay Swift said. โ€œThe community fridge will be most easily accessible to the community of Garden City, however anyone in need is welcome to the food items available.โ€

This effort is a combined ministry of the Methodist Church and Garden City Food Pantry, and was financed by a grant from the United Way.

โ€œWe are very excited about providing this extension of our main food pantry to the community,โ€ Swift said. โ€œBy having nonperishable items and frozen, refrigerated and fresh foods available at all times, our neighbors may get foods to feed their families. We feel this will be a nice addition to our monthly pantry.โ€

Food and monetary donations can be brought to the church or food pantry during operating hours.
