Farmers market begins

The Monroeville Farmers Market will kick off its 2024 season from 9 a.m. to noon May 11 at the Monroeville Mall between Dick’s and Best Buy, 501 Mall Circle Drive.

It will take place weekly through mid-November on Saturdays.

Scottish Heritage Sunday

Hillcrest United Presbyterian Church will hold its annual Scottish Heritage Day celebration on May 5 at 11 a.m. The worship service, run by the Rev. John Lolla Jr., will recollect the origins of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland and help to familiarize patrons with the story of the church’s foundation.

Lolla is the author of “The Creek Runs Deep,” a five-volume history of the Presbyterian Church of Plum Creek. The series can be found at the Monroeville library.

After the service, Scottish baked goods and refreshments will be available outside. Entertainment will include Scottish singers, dancers, and bagpipers.

This is an all-ages community event and is free and open to the public.

Sage’s Army fundraiser

Sage’s Army Inc., a Hempfield-based drug and alcohol abuse and prevention organization, will turn back the clock to for a fundraiser featuring a disc jockey playing 1980s music with dancing, clothes and hair styles from that decade, from 7 to 11 p.m. May 17 on the 10th floor of the Jonnet Building, 4099 William Penn Highway, Monroeville.

The tickets are $15 per person and $25 per couple. The price includes a buffet of appetizers and soda, water and coffee. Non-alcoholic mocktails will be available for an additional cost.

There will be raffles and a silent auction.

Library programs

Here are some upcoming programs at the Monroeville Public Library.

• May 4: Introduction to aromatherapy with clinical aromatherapist Tiffany Burton, 10 a.m. Learn about the history, science and practice of aromatherapy.

• May 7: Free belly dance workshop with Amethyst of Pittsburgh Belly Dance, 7 p.m. The group will offer a quick summary of the history and practice of belly dancing along with a demonstration.

• May 14: Cricut introduction, 4 p.m. Learn about the capabilities of the cricut machine in the library’s maker space. The computer-driven tool can cut paper, vinyl, fabric and more. Class fee is $5, and the class is geared toward adults.

• May 15: Learn to draw zentangle, 6:30 p.m. Learn to draw zentangle, a simple technique for pattern drawing with artist Sue Schneider. To register, visit Meetup.com and register to become a member of the “Zentanglers in Pittsburgh” group. There is no cost to register.

• May 18: “Wizard of Oz” mini-tea, 10:30 a.m. Families are invited to attend a mini-tea with games, activities, crafts and treats themed around the classic children’s film. The event is geared toward children 11 years old and younger.

Senior resource fair

The Plum Community Center and Life Options Pittsburgh will host a senior resource fair from 9 a.m. to noon April 26. There is no cost to attend. Meet with local businesses that provide products and services for senior citizens.

Audiology practice expands

Pittsburgh-based HearWell Center has relocated to a new office in Wilkins.

The new office, which opened in mid-March, is at Penn Center East’s Building 4 at 400 Penn Center Blvd. The new office is nearly three times the size of HearWell’s previous Forest Hills office, and will allow for increased services, staff and new patients.

Rotary charity golf outing

Monroeville Rotary will hold its annual charity golf outing on June 10 at Edgewood Country Club. Sign-in begins at 11 a.m. and there will be a shotgun scramble start at noon.

Golfers can register in advance as individuals or as a foursome. Registration includes a golf cart, refreshments on the course, a box lunch and dinner. Non-golfers can opt for dinner only, which is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Businesses and individuals are being sought for several sponsorship opportunities. Funds raised help to support local and global causes.

Manor plant swap open to all gardeners

The first-ever Manor Borough Plant Swap will take place from 9 a.m. to noon May 18 at the Manor Borough Community Room, library and parking lot, 44 Main St.

The event is free and open to gardeners of all experience levels. The morning will include children’s activities, information booths and a garden-themed raffle. It will be held rain or shine.

Registration forms for participants are due May 11.
