The small bridge carrying Old William Penn Highway over Turtle Creek in Murrysville will close next week for temporary repairs.
Beginning Oct. 14, the bridge near the intersection Old William Penn Highway and Hills Church Road will close as work crews begin temporary repairs aimed at bringing its weight limit back up to 16 tons.
The bridge had its weight rating reduced to 16 tons in 2022, and further reduced to 6 tons in the spring.
Kukurin Contracting in Washington Township was awarded the $170,000 contract. The work is expected to take about 45 days to complete.
An approximately 2-mile detour will bring drivers around the area via Cline Hollow and Hills Church roads.
The weight rating reductions were the result of periodic inspections by Pittsburgh-based SAI Engineering, contracted by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The weight reduction to 6 tons primarily affects school buses, large truck traffic and fire trucks.
