A Murrysville man pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the stabbing of his mother, months after a judge rejected a proposed deal with prosecutors that would have seen him serve four years on probation.
Andrew J. Farbarik, 32, was allowed to plead guilty to lesser charges and was sentenced to serve up to 23 months in jail and additional two years on probation and house arrest as part of a revised deal that will allows for his immediate release from incarceration and into the care of a crisis mental health treatment program.
Farbarik stabbed his mother two times during an argument at the family home on Feb. 28, police said.
She previously testified she was not serious injured.
Prosecutors said during a hearing earlier this year Farbarik was diagnosed with schizophrenia and a change in his medication led to the destabilization of his mental health and ultimately the attack on his mother.
In June, Westmoreland County Common Pleas Judge Tim Krieger rejected proposed deal with prosecutors for Farbarik to plead guilty to misdemeanor counts of simple assault and reckless endangerment and to serve four years on probation. Prosecutors said they would dismiss charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault.
Krieger questioned the proposed sentence that included no additional jail time and said he wanted to review Farbarik’s mental health records.
He agreed to a similar plea deal Monday.
Farbarik has served about nine months in jail since his arrest. He will be paroled to the county’s Assertive Community Treatment program, which is an around-the-clock in-home program to assist adults diagnosed with serious mental health issues.
The judge ordered Farbarik continue with the treatment program through the end of his parole period.
