Jim Armstrong was looking forward to reprising his role — at least for one night.
The retired Franklin Regional coach was set to coach in the third annual Western PA Softball All-Star Game set for 7:15 p.m. June 16 at Plum.
Armstrong said he was excited to coach the game again.
What does he like most about the event?
“Pretty much the camaraderie with the other coaches and having fun with the players,” Armstrong said. “We rotate between coaching in dugout and bases. It’s fun getting to know the players. I enjoy seeing them excel.”
The game is for the top senior players in the WPIAL and City League who were nominated by their coaches and selected by a committee.
Gold team coaches are Phil DiLonardo of Plum and Jenna Muncie of Peters Township.
“Phil came up with the idea a few years ago and all of us have really enjoyed the whole process,” Armstrong said. “Phil and Jenna really do most of the work . I am hopeful that we can keep on do this.”
Black team coaches are Tom Sorce of Shaler and Armstrong.
“My team beat Phil twice and he wants revenge,” Armstrong said.
Another Franklin Regional product who played in the all-star game last year will be a special guest. South Florida star freshman outfielder Toryn Fulton, a Franklin Regional alum, was scheduled to be an honorary coach for the Black team.
Six players from Westmoreland County made the all-star rosters. Grace Stein of Jeannette and Alyssa Perona of Kiski Area were on the gold team, while Emily Bozek of Hempfield, Torrie DeStefano of Penn-Trafford, Anna Linder of Yough and Abbie Telli of Norwin were primed to suit up for the black team.
