Patricia Templeton Whalen, 87, of Sewickley, passed away peacefully, with family by her side, Sunday evening, Feb. 5, 2023. She was born April 9, 1935, in Pittsburgh, to Dr. Paul S. Templeton and Florida Lois (Newby) Templeton. Patty entered the world with her identical twin, Paula Lynn "Polly" Templeton. Together they joined their older brother, Irvin "Sonny" Templeton. The three siblings had a happy and carefree childhood growing up in Ben Avon, while sometimes causing their share of youthful mischief.Patty attended Winchester Thurston School and graduated from Avonworth High School. She attended Denison University with her twin, Polly, graduating in 1957. Patty was the beloved wife of Malachy Whalen, having just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Patty met Malachy on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend. They married on Jan. 23, 1959. Together they settled in Sewickley in 1963 and raised three children (and countless dogs).Malachy started his insurance agency in Pittsburgh while Patty tended to her growing flock at home. Patty was an enthusiastic racquets player and could be found on any given day at the tennis and paddle tennis courts of the local clubs. She also loved to garden and was a longtime member and supporter of the Trowel & Error Garden Club in Sewickley. Patty's other interests included a lifelong love of music and art and a passion for the history and culture of Native Americans. Patty was the cherished mother of Clark W. Whalen, of Sewickley, Malinda W. (Tim) Newman, of Wheeling, W.Va., and Claude T. Whalen. Patty was inseparable from her twin sister, Polly Templeton, of Ben Avon. She was also the adored "MyMy" to her grandchildren, Robert D. "Robby" Newman (fiancee Calli), Malachy W. "Mac" Newman, Alice T. Newman, Kelley T. Whalen and James P. "Tommy" Whalen. Patty was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Paul S. and Florida Lois Templeton; her beloved aunt and uncle, Irvin and Mary Newby; and her brother, Irvin W. "Sonny" Templeton. Services and interment held privately. Arrangements entrusted to R.D. COPELAND LTD., Irvine Chapel. In remembrance of Patty's life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to BrightFocus Foundation to aid Alzheimer's disease research.
