North Allegheny’s track and field athletes navigated rain drops and lengthy delays on the first day of the WPIAL individual championships May 15 and achieved a wealth of medals.
Mackenzie Winning lived up to her surname and captured first place in the 400-meter run in 56.45 seconds, edging teammates Isabella Costa, who was second in 57.39, and Maya Currie, who placed fifth in 57.90.
Jamie Frisco also captured a gold medal by winning the shot put title with a toss of 40 feet, 1.25 inches. Teammate Taylor Neese was third in the event (38-3).
And, the NA girls 3,200 relay of Eva Kynaston, Erin McGoey, Kendall Lucas and Elizabeth Pizon) finished first in 9:23.09.
Also for the girls, Lindsay Breneman was second in pole vault (12-0), Sophie Aglietta was fourth in pole vault (11-6), Wren Kucler took fifth in the 1,600 (5:04.11), Lucas was sixth in the 800 (2:18.04) and Audrey Maxwell was eighth in discus (108-11).
For the NA boys, Zach Duckworth placed second in pole vault (14-3), Grey Lowman took fourth in the 300 hurdles (39.52), Jack Bertram was fifth in the 1,600 (4:12.40), Dylan Langdon placed fifth in high jump (6-1), Brady Brinkley was sixth in the 400 (50.71) and Jack Yatchenko finished eighth in shot put (50-10).
The 3,200 relay and the 400 relay each placed third.
The second day of the WPIAL meet was contested after deadline for this edition.
Ruiz, Schmidt picked for Big 33
North Allegheny seniors Allyson Ruiz and Kyra Schmidt have been selected to play in the first PSFCA Big 33 girls flag football tournament, set for May 25-26, at Cumberland Valley. The games will be played in conjunction with the Big 33 Football Classic.
The tournament features the top 20 senior players from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Ruiz, a running back/defensive back, and Schmidt, a quarterback, will represent the Steelers in the Western Pa. conference. There also will be teams representing the Eagles, Ravens and Commanders.
North Allegheny coach Michelle Ruiz will help coach the Western Pa. conference team.
Tigers tennis wins in PIAA 1st round
North Allegheny’s boys tennis team swept District 3’s Hempfield, 5-0, in the first round of the PIAA tournament May 14.
Advaita Sircar, Trey Davidson and Evan Kaufman won their singles matches in straight sets. Sri Thirumala/Shivum Telang and Adithya Ramadas Guptha/Adhav Ramadas won their doubles matches for the WPIAL champion Tigers, who improved to 17-0.

NA softball bounced from playoffs
Lyla Mowery threw a complete-game five-hitter and Olivia Ford singled, tripled and scored twice to lead No. 6 Canon-McMillan past North Allegheny, 3-1, in the Class 6A quarterfinals May 15.
Emily Booher singled and drove in a run for the Big Macs, who were swept by the Tigers in the regular season.
Anne Melle had two hits and Julia Drazga drove in a run for No. 3 North Allegheny, which finished its season 12-7.
NA girls lacrosse falls in quarterfinals
North Allegheny’s girls lacrosse season came to a close May 15 after a 17-3 loss to No. 1 Mt. Lebanon in the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinals.
Reagan Riordan scored twice to give her 50 goals for the season, and Isla Abrams added a goal. Izzie Trunzo made 10 saves.
The Tigers, who finished the season 8-9, defeated Sewickley Academy, 15-12, in the first round on May 13. Avery Anderson and Riordan each had six goals, and Abrams added three scores to lead the Tigers.
