Ross Township, PA – 3-20-24 – Students at Holy Cross Academy (HCA) in Ross Township displayed their commitment to community service through impactful initiatives this quarter.

Raising Awareness for Young Women's Health: HCA held a "Pink-Out" during their January basketball games to support the Young Women's Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation (YWBCAF). The school community rallied behind the cause, with students, families, and players from opposing teams participating.

Through sales of pink T-shirts, a 50/50 raffle, baked goods, and raffle baskets, the HCA community raised over $1500. Principal Kevin Frye, along with the JV and Varsity girls' and boys' basketball teams, proudly presented a check to Jennifer Kehm, Co-Founder of YWBCAF. This non-profit organization tirelessly raises awareness of breast cancer in young women and provides crucial support groups within the Pittsburgh area.

Spreading Well Wishes to Local Hospitals: In the spirit of Catholic Schools Week, held in January, HCA students embarked on another service project aimed at bringing comfort to patients in need. The school community collected various items, including small toys, coloring books, crayons, puzzles, eyeglasses, and personal care items, to create 250 care packages.

These packages, designed for both adults and children, were distributed to the Emergency Departments of AHN McCandless and UPMC Passavant. Students also created heartfelt get-well cards with messages of hope and encouragement.

Small Hands Making a Big Difference: Even the youngest students at HCA are focusing on the importance of serving others. HCA preschool and pre-kindergarten classes took time this month to color "care" bears and make beaded shamrock wreaths which will be included in the food pantry packages that are picked up at the HUB Community Center in West View. They plan to continue this service partnership and supply more handmade creations to the HUB clients for Easter and throughout the spring.

Rooted in Gospel values and committed to academic excellence, Holy Cross Academy seeks to foster spiritual development, service to community and a life-long love of learning in every child. HCA develops well-rounded students that lead their communities and are known by their service to others.
