June is almost over? Hard to believe, but time is flying. Make the most out of these summer weekends:
Pride and Joy
With Pride Month coming to an end, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center in Downtown Pittsburgh is having its own event Friday, “Pride and Joy.”
The evening includes a celebration of Black queer joy and creativity, with a live podcast taping, musical performances and a DJ-led dance party that goes late into the night. There will also be health resources and a food truck onsite.
The free event runs from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday at the Wilson Center, 980 Penn Ave. Register at awaacc.org.
‘Lord of the Rings’ in concert
The “Lord of the Rings” film trilogy is highly acclaimed and well-remembered by fans, and one of its most memorable aspects is its score. This weekend, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will be performing along to “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” at Heinz Hall.
The movie premiered in 2002, the middle film of the epic trilogy. The sweeping score played by live musicians will be accompanied by the film. (Planning a year ahead? “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” will be in concert June 25-27, 2027.)
Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m., all at Heinz Hall in Downtown Pittsburgh. See pittsburghsymphony.org for details.
SkyWatch: Native American Stories
Learn about Native American folklore and tales through the stars at the Kamin Science Center. The late Saturday evening jaunt through the heavens will utilize the planetarium and observatory deck (assuming the sky decides to be clear).
Participants will learn about Native American culture, names for different astronomical phenomena and other stories.
The event is from 9 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Kamin Science Center on the North Shore. Tickets are $12 for all ages. To learn more and get tickets, visit kaminsciencecenter.org.
