Amazon ended months of speculation by acknowledging what many had suspected for close to two years: It will be using the 1 million-square-foot warehouse being built in New Stanton.

The $120 million warehouse with the blue stripes on the exterior will be operated by Amazon, company spokesman Sam Fisher said Tuesday. Amazon signage will be visible at the site in the near future, he said.

The warehouse, located above Glenn Fox Road, could create about 600 jobs, according to Matt Virgin, senior vice president for SunCap Property Group LLC of Charlotte, N.C., the site developer.

Virgin had told New Stanton officials in December that the project could be completed by the end of this year.

About 180 trucks a day are expected to move products from the warehouse every day, according to SunCap representatives who presented plans to New Stanton officials in August 2021.

The site will be large enough to hold parking for about 560 vehicles.

The warehouse is located south of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and bounded by Westinghouse Drive and Glenn Fox Road. The trucks would travel across the Pennsylvania Turnpike on the Glenn Fox Road bridge and turn onto Arona Road, traveling about a mile to the turnpike.

To build the warehouse at that site, the construction company leveled a hillside and created a giant hill of its own looming over Westinghouse Road.

The Amazon spokesman said he could not comment on when the company will move into the warehouse or how many jobs might be created by operations on such a large scale.

SunCap Property Group purchased the site from New Stanton Technology Park LP of Canonsburg for $10.57 million under the corporate name Glenn Fox New Stanton LLC.

Virgin could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

The Amazon warehouse in New Stanton would be one of about 14 warehouses, or fulfillment centers, that Amazon operates in Pennsylvania, according to the WarehouseGig website.

When Amazon opened its fulfillment center in Findlay in September 2020, the company said it had more than 1,000 workers at the facility. It also has warehouses in Ohio Township off Interstate 79 and Pittsburgh’s West End.

For New Stanton, it will be the second huge warehouse in the borough. Shipping giant UPS has operated a terminal in New Stanton for decades, taking advantage of location at the intersection of Interstate 70 and the turnpike.

Amazon made the announcement of its New Stanton site on the heels of its second quarter earnings report, in which it recently posted sales of $134.4 billion, up from $121.2 billion for the same period a year ago. The company’s net income rose to $6.7 billion in the second quarter, compared to a net loss of $2 billion for the same quarter in 2022.

County officials could not be reached for comment on the economic impact of the project: Jason Rigone, executive director of the Westmoreland County Redevelopment Authority or Westmoreland County commissioners Sean Kertes and Doug Chew.
