Defending WPIAL champion Norwin rebounded from a tough 51-50 season-opening loss to Penn-Trafford with two wins at the State College tournament and another over District 9 power Kennedy Catholic.
After a 49-40 win over Abington Heights, Norwin pushed past State College, 48-42, as Kendall Berger scored 17 points.
In their home opener, the Knights pushed past Kenndy Catholic, the two-time defending Class 2A champion, 56-46, as Berger scored 19 and Bella Furno added 13.
Norwin opened the season as the No. 2-ranked team in WPIAL Class 6A.
The Knights were set to open Section 2-6A play Dec. 19 at Connellsville.
Knights rebound
The Norwin boys basketball team came back from a 68-51 loss in the season opener to Penn-Trafford with a 66-32 win over Steel Valley at the Jeannette tournament.
Junior Nate Kuch had 13 points and Mario Csukas added 10 in the victory.
Norwin then defeated West Mifflin, 61-41, as Csukas scored 17 and junior Alex Graney had 13.
Norwin (2-1) was set to open Section 2-6A play at Upper St. Clair.
Chasing a win
The Norwin hockey team still is looking for its first win of the season.
The Knights fell to 0-8 with a 10-5 loss to Latrobe. Parker Toth had two goals and Dom Cerilli had a goal and an assist in the setback.
Gaydos top freshman
St. Francis (Pa.) cross country runner Rosemary Gaydos (Norwin) was named the Northeast Conference Freshman of the Year after her 19th-place finish at the conference championships in 18 minutes, 52.2 seconds.
