Norwin football lineman Sebastian Summerville picked up his first NCAA Division II scholarship offer, from Fairmont State. Summerville is a 6-foot-5, 280-pound two-way lineman.
He also is a heavyweight wrestler for the Knights.
Cunningham schedule out
Organizers announced the schedule for the sixth annual Tre Cunningham Memorial Basketball Tournament later this month at Jeannette High School.
The event is for boys varsity teams and celebrates the memory of Cunnigham, a former multi-sport standout for the Jayhawks who died in 2020.
Pool play begins June 11 with Jeannette vs. Yough at 6 p.m., Norwin vs. Ringgold at 7, Hempfield vs. Penn-Trafford at 8 and Ringgold vs. Greensburg Central Catholic at 9.
Yough will play Greensburg Salem at 7:30 at Jeannette McKee Elementary School.
On June 12, the schedule has Westmont Hilltop vs. Norwin at 6 p.m., Belle Vernon vs. Greensburg Salem at 7, Westmont Hilltop vs. Hempfield at 8, and Belle Vernon vs. Mt. Pleasant at 9.
Two games at the elementary school are Mt. Pleasant vs. Norwin at 7:30 and Penn-Trafford vs. GCC at 8:30.
A single-elimination tournament will be played June 13. The MVP will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Rothrauff a top rusher
Norwin running back Giovanni Rothrauff will be one of the top returning rushers in the WPIAL. He had the fifth-most yards of the leading ground gainers with a school-record 1,586 on 236 carries.
The top four returnees are Antonio Perkins of Burrell (1,872), Tyler Eber of Thomas Jefferson (1,849), McKeesport’s Kemon Spell (1,755) and Tevin Owen-Cratsenberg of Highlands (1,605).
Seton Hill honors
More postseason awards came in for the Seton Hill baseball team after a 42-12 season.
Sophomore third baseman Brady McGuire was named a DII Collegiate Commissioners Association second team All-American and a third team All-American by American Baseball Coaches Association.
He previously was named the D2CCA Atlantic Region Player of the Year, PSAC West Athlete of the Year and a National College Baseball Writers Association All-American.
He led the Griffins with a .443 batting average and 54 RBIs.
McGuire was one of the six Griffins to make the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings all-region teams.
Junior catcher Jakob Haynes (Penn-Trafford), junior shortstop Owen Henne, senior outfielder Jack Whalen (Norwin) and sophomore pitcher Sean Williams made the first team.
Junior pitcher Marc Wechtenhiser was a second-team selection.
