Irwin Mayor Jeff Clem, who was reelected to a four-year term last November, intends to resign from office, citing “personal and borough issues.”
Clem, a Republican, made the announcement about a month after the death of his wife, Diane.
“It was a lifelong dream to become mayor of this great little town and I enjoyed every minute of it,” Clem wrote on his Facebook page.
Clem paused and grew emotional at Wednesday’s council meeting while thanking borough representatives for their condolences.
Borough council met in executive session following the public meeting, which Clem attended. In his announcement, Clem did not say when he intends to resign.
Clem could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Irwin Borough manager Shari Martino said Thursday that Clem had not submitted a written resignation, so there are no immediate plans to replace him. Council does not meet again until a workshop session June 30.
Clem, a former state prison employee, has served as the borough’s mayor since January 2022, when he defeated Democrat Gail Macioce, a four-term council member. Clem was unopposed in the 2025 Republican primary and the November general election.
In November 2019, Clem lost a bid for a borough council seat by four votes.
