For the first time, Pennsylvania swept the USA Wrestling Freestyle National Duals and Kyle Martin oversaw the whole thing.
Jumping airplanes and bouncing from city to city made it a wild ride, but a worthwhile one.
Martin, the Norwin head coach and PA Men’s Director of Freestyle and Greco Roman Wrestling for USA Wrestling, beamed with pride after the series sweep.
Team PA won the 14-U, 16-U and 18-U divisions, reaching the finals in five of six tournaments overall.
Martin won four national titles as the 16-U director but took it up a notch when he became a leader with a broader scope in 2023.
“Once I was elected to the role of men’s director for the state, I made it a focus to put the same energy and effort into 14-U and juniors in my role.”
The junior team’s best finish prior to Martin taking control was ninth. It now has finished first two years in a row.
Team PA now has five national titles at 14-U, three at 16-U and two at juniors.
“It was a historic year for our state competing all over the country,” Martin said.
The 14-U title was won in Florida, 16-U in Utah and juniors in Wisconsin.
“Big picture, the duals series is all about development and getting sharp for the big show, Fargo (N.D.), for the U.S. Marines National Championships in July,” Martin said.
PA has won 16-U and junior titles at nationals three straight years.
“I want to keep that streak going,” Martin said.
Martin said there is no secret to the string of titles.
“No secret, just all in on developing our future world and Olympic champions in Pennsylvania,” he said. “I surround our athletes with the best coaches possible, I engulf myself in the trends of the sport to keep our state ahead of the game, and I work every single day to get better at being a coach. On top of that, I practice servant leadership with our high-level athletes. Whatever they need to jump to the next level or compete at their highest ability, I make it happen.”
Martin’s role keep him busy. He has built a network of college and international coaches, watches hours of film each week and attends numerous rules meetings and coaching conventions.
“Our athletes in the state know that I fight for them tirelessly and that has been a great tool to get our athletes to buy into our state’s mission,” Martin said. “Basically, I keep my ego at the door. No matter the previous successes, none of that matters today.
“At the end of the day, none of this is about me and everything is about the athletes.”
Norwin’s Dom Butera helped the 16-U team win in Utah, while Allie Mitchell was part of the 14-U title run.
Martin was on the road for 18 straight days and was packing again for the trip to Fargo before an international event with USA Wrestling.
