Abigail Boyer will gladly take this loop.

The Norwin alum and incoming junior at Miami (Ohio) was the recipient of the inaugural No Laying Up Endowed Named Evans Scholarship.

No Laying Up is a popular golf podcast that partnered with the Evans Scholars Foundation.

Boyer, a caddie at Pittsburgh Field Club, won the Western Golf Association Chick Evans Scholarship as a senior at Norwin in 2024. The $125,000-plus scholarship is the largest for caddies in the nation.

When she heard about another opportunity, she went for the green in two.

“My one advisor reached out to me and said that there was this cool opportunity, a partnership between No Laying Up and the Evans Scholars,” Boyer told the West Penn Golf Association. “They asked if I would be interested. I didn’t know much about No Laying Up at the time, but I watched some of their podcast, learned more about them and thought this would be an awesome opportunity.”

The Evans Scholarship provides full tuition and housing for top caddies navigating a college career.

Boyer hopes her achievement inspires other female caddies to pursue a similar endeavor.

“I think it’s awesome,” Boyer said. “I’m glad I can be a good representative for young female caddies and show them that it is possible. If you’re interested in the game and want to get started, you can definitely do it.”

Boyer began working as a caddie when she was a freshman at Norwin.

“I really enjoyed caddying and wanted to learn and be able to play myself,” she said. “I wanted to be outside and connect with really cool people and saw the variety of people that play (at the Pittsburgh Field Club) and wanted to make connections.

“I love caddying here so much. The members are amazing, I’m friends with all of the caddies and every loop is awesome. It’s a great time.”

Boyer carries a double major in strategic communications and fashion design. The latter could propel her forward in the golf world.

“I was shopping for caddie clothes, and I noticed just the lack of comfortable options, shorts that didn’t have pockets, stuff like that,” she said. “I’ve always loved designing and coming up with stuff, so I thought it would be cool to do that long term.

“I’m hoping to design some women’s golf apparel. I just kind of design on the side right now, but I’d love to have my own brand in the future.”

No Laying Up has a goal to raise $500,000 to fund the scholarship long term.

“It’s honestly insane,” Boyer said. “I just feel so fortunate that I was given this opportunity.”

D-I offer for Giannikas

Giuliana Giannikas is only going to be a sophomore, but she already is on the radar of NCAA Division I coaches.

One university is trying to get ahead of the rest.

Giannikas received a scholarship offer last month from Mercyhurst.

The talented point guard is just 5-foot-2 but she has a high ceiling.

Giannikas, whose ball-handling and passing skills were present from her first game, helped Norwin to a 19-6 record and a runner-up finish in WPIAL Class 6A. The playmaker led Norwin in 3-pointers made and 3-point percentage, and had 48 assists and 45 steals, with a team-best plus-201. She averaged 9 points a game.

Knights win 7-on-7 event

Football season is months away, but Norwin is beginning to build some momentum.

With eight seniors gone, including quarterback Tristyn Tavares and several skill players, this summer is about reps and new faces increasing their stock.

The Knights brought home a trophy and endured strong competition at the West Liberty Football 7-on-7 Passing and Big Man Camp held at the West Liberty’s West Family Stadium.

Norwin went 5-0 to take the 7-on-7 title, defeating Wheeling Park, Southmoreland, Uniontown (twice) and Waynesburg.

Max Ritz saw the reps at quarterback, while Xaiver Holtsman was the top receiver, and Masyn Ritter and Maddox Pivarnik stood out on defense.

“The event was great not only for our skill (players), but lineman, too,” Norwin coach Mike Brown said. “The whole team got quality work and got to compete against other great programs. The coaching staff got to evaluate who wants to compete and is understanding some scheme aspects of the offense and defense. It was a good quality day.”

Summerville offered

Norwin football player Sebastian Summerville picked up his second NCAA Division II scholarship offer, from West Liberty.

A 6-foot-2, 280-pound lineman who also wrestles for the Knights, Summerville also has an offer from Fairmont State.

His second offer was presented after a 7-on-7 and big man challenge at a camp at West Liberty.

Maddock commits

Brothers will reunite in Latrobe with Caleb Maddock announcing his commitment to play soccer at Saint Vincent.

The incoming senior forward was one of the Knights’ top goal scorers last season, He will team up with his brother, Daniel, who will be a sophomore at SVC. He won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year after providing nine goals and five assists in 18 games.
