The University of Pittsburgh will not house students at the Hampton Inn in Oakland next year.

In the past school year, up to 250 students lived at the hotel, across from UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital at 3315 Hamlet St.

Affected students were notified of the change Tuesday, said Jared Stonesifer, Pitt spokesman. It wasn’t immediately clear how many students were assigned to live at the Hampton Inn next year.

“The University of Pittsburgh will conclude its temporary leasing arrangement at the Hampton Inn in the summer of 2026,” he said. “The demand for a Pitt education has never been higher, and we are actively exploring housing options to meet it, including recently announced plans for a new residence hall at Fifth and Ruskin avenues, ensuring we remain well positioned for the future.”

Stonesifer would not say what led to Pitt’s decision.

Students will still be guaranteed housing. They can either live at Irvis Hall or enter a special housing selection process and choose a dorm room available on campus.

A hearing was scheduled Thursday before the city’s Zoning Board of Adjustment. The city ruled that Pitt would need a new permit to lease the Hampton Inn and determined the use of hotel rooms for student housing amounted to dormitory use. Pitt planned to challenge that ruling.

City spokeswoman Molly Onufer did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Last fall, Pitt housed 400 students at the Hampton Inn and two apartment buildings, the Pennsylvania Apartments at 300 N. Dithridge St. and Wellington Apartments at 245 Melwood Ave., to meet increased student housing demand. It also reconfigured existing buildings on campus to add 300 beds.

Pitt saw a record 5,800 freshmen at the Oakland campus last fall.

Officials in May said this year’s freshmen class is anticipated at around 5,000 students. Pitt received nearly 74,000 applications — a university record — for the 2026-27 school year.

Starting this fall, incoming students will be guaranteed housing for two years. The housing guarantee was previously for three years.

The university’s goal is to enroll a total of 22,000 students (undergraduate and graduate) at the Oakland campus by 2028.

Pitt plans to build a 420-bed dormitory adjacent to its Music Building on Fifth Avenue, between Bellefield and Ruskin avenues. The dormitory is scheduled to open in fall 2028.
