A portion of Universal Road in Penn Hills will be closed for bridge repairs starting July 13.
According to a release from Allegheny County Department of Public Works, part of Universal near Hershey Road is expected to be closed until October.
“(The closure) is required for work on Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad Bridge No. 1, which carries Universal Road over the Union Railroad tracks,” the release said.
The project includes deck, approach, sidewalk and barrier repairs. The bridge’s structural steel will be cleaned and painted. The downspout, part of the bridge’s drainage design, also will be cleaned, according to the county.
Traffic will be detoured using Saltsburg and Stotler roads. Homes and businesses near the closure area will remain accessible at all times.
According to the county, the bridge is used by an average of over 9,200 vehicles daily. It has a poor bridge condition rating — a three— on a scale from zero to nine based on National Bridge Inspection Standards.
Pugliano Construction of Plum is the primary construction contractor for the $514,000 project.
