Fire engulfs school bus in East Hills

Just after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, a school bus in the East Hills neighborhood broke out into flames near Sunrise Avenue and Fairlawn Street, said Pittsburgh Public Safety.

The driver, the only one on the bus at the time, called 9-1-1 reporting that smoke had begun pouring into the bus. When officers and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire arrived, the bus was fully engulfed in flames. The driver was able to get out of the vehicle before the fire spread.

No students were on board at the time and no injuries were reported.

The Fire Investigation Unit determined the cause of the fire to be mechanical. Sunrise Avenue was closed in both directions between Fairlawn street and Remington Drive during the investigation.

Penn Hills man arrested in Brookline

A Penn Hills man who was reportedly wanted since January, was taken into custody on Tuesday, said the Allegheny County Sheriff’s office.

Sofion Moore, 32, of Penn Hills, had bench warrants issued for his arrest in January. The sheriff’s office said the first warrant involves his failure to show for a status conference on a case involving firearms charges and the second is for a probation violation on a case involving burglary.

Moore also has an active warrant for an escape charge after walking away from Renewal Inc., a non-profit organization in the field of drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation, in December 2023.

County detectives narrowed down Moore’s location to an address on Bellaire Place in Brookline. When detectives arrived at the address earlier today, they reportedly found Moore hiding underneath a table in the dining room of the residence.

Moore was arrested without incident and transported to the Allegheny County Jail.

Chandler was also previously charged in July for stealing from cars in Carnegie and fleeing from police. Officers also found money, heroin and suspected Xanax in his possession.
