W. Gene Perkins, 84, of Irwin, passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, at Montefiore Hospital. He was born April 24, 1939, in Crichton, W.Va., a son of the late John Samuel and Olive Margaret Rader Perkins. Gene was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Irwin. Prior to his retirement, he was a data officer at Mellon Bank. He was a volunteer at the Wesley Chapel Food Bank in Florida, a past president of the former Alcoma Golf Club and past president of the Men's Club at the Saddlebrook Golf and Tennis Resort in Wesley Chapel, Fla. Gene was an avid golfer and dedicated Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was a graduate of Fairmont State University in West Virginia, where he played football and ran track. In addition, Gene was the first ever president of the TKE Fraternity. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Harold and his wife, Nancy; sister, Evelyn Rae Odell and husband, Rodney; and nephew, Matthew Wayne Perkins. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara Ferrari Perkins; sons, Joe (Linda) and Chris (Kristin) Perkins; brothers, Robert Lee (Reba) Perkins and Jack Wayne (Claren) Perkins; and grandchildren, Michael (Ashleigh), Nathan, Matthew, Courtney and Jake Perkins; great-granddaughter, Ellie; and 13 nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the JAMES W. SHIRLEY FUNERAL HOME, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon. A funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church at 9 a.m. Saturday.
