Plum JROTC collecting for Toys for Tots

The Plum High School Junior ROTC program will hold its 10th annual “Stuff-A-Bus” for Toys for Tots on Dec. 12.

Students, staff and other volunteers will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots from 6 to 8 p.m. at the high school bus lot.

Drop-off boxes are also at schools.

Plum to host ‘Cinebrunch’ event

Plum will host its annual Cinebrunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 at the municipal center, 2000 Mike Thomas Way.

The 2018 animated movie, “The Grinch,” will be shown.

The $3 admission per person includes a donut and drink.

Oakmont Borough Council seeks student representative

Oakmont Borough has officially opened applications for a youth representative position. High school students living in Oakmont are eligible to apply.

The program is aimed to help students learn critical skills and give them first-hand experience with team building and collaboration, public speaking, public engagement, budgeting and running public meetings. Youth representatives also will have an opportunity to add their opinion to the conversation.

Applications can be accessed on the borough website. Interested parties can apply until Dec. 10.

Plum School District prepares for annual Make-A-Wish telethon

Plum School District’s 24th annual Make-A-Wish Telethon will be held on Dec. 20.

It has a $50,000 goal this year. Last year, the telethon raised nearly $51,000; over 23 years, it has raised more than $1.4 million.

The telethon is sponsored by the district’s television production classes led by Rick Berrott, who has been involved since the first telethon as a teacher and sponsor of the National Honor Society.

Santa visiting Plum neighborhoods

Santa will tour Plum neighborhoods with the help of borough firefighters on Dec. 21.

Logan’s Ferry will start at 10 a.m. and Holiday Park will start at noon, while Renton and Unity are both scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Christmas Bazaar in Oakmont

The Oakmont Methodist Church will hold a Christmas Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the church, at the corner of Fifth Street and Maryland Avenue in Oakmont.

The event will include a luncheon, bake sale, holiday crafts and attic treasures.

Plum AARP meeting, luncheon on tap

Plum AARP will celebrate Christmas at their meeting and luncheon buffet at Palmieri’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The entertainment will be Kathy Zang, who will perform Christmas songs.

Plum AARP is a social organization open to residents of Plum, Penn Hills, Monroeville and surrounding communities.

Newcomers are welcome at regular monthly meetings, always held at noon at Unity Community Church on the second Tuesday of each month, except June.

Milltown Road closed through January for slide repair

Part of Milltown Road in Penn Hills will be closed through late January while crews repair two slides along the road. The closure between Hulton Road and Newfield Drive was scheduled to start at 7 a.m. Dec. 2, PennDOT announced.

Nearly 5,300 vehicles travel the road daily, according to PennDOT, and it is used by many Plum drivers as a way to get to Oakmont, Harmar and beyond.

The posted detour is about 4.3 miles long. From north of the closure:

• From Milltown Road, turn right onto Hulton Road;

• Turn left onto Saltsburg Road;

• Turn left onto Leechburg Road;

• Follow Leechburg Road back to Milltown Road.

From south of the closure, the detour is the same route but in the opposite direction.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society seeks ‘student visionaries’

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is seeking participants for its “Student Visionaries of the Year” program, where local student teams undergo a seven-week leadership program to raise awareness and funding for blood cancer patients and their families and build professional skills.

Teams are tasked with organizing fundraisers and other events for the benefit of the society.

Anti-litter award program offered for kids

Environmental nonprofit Keep America Beautiful is seeking entries from children in kindergarten through sixth grade for its Litter Hawk Youth Award Program.

Children are asked to complete a project sharing their hope, optimism and concerns about litter and inspire others through art, words or video.

The theme for the contest is “Join the Greatest American Cleanup! Show us how you can keep your community litter-free for America’s 250th birthday.”

Children in kindergarten through grade 4 can create a poster; those in grade 5 are asked to write an essay; and those in grade 6 can create a video.

The deadline to participate is Jan. 31. Winners will be announced in April as part of an awards ceremony at the state Capitol building in Harrisburg.

Rotary offering need-based scholarships

The Bob Williams Rotary Memorial Scholarship Program is accepting applications from current high school seniors and GED students for 2024-25.

This year, eight need-based scholarships at $5,000 each will be awarded.

The scholarships are open to students in Allegheny and Beaver counties, as well as those attending New Kensington- Arnold, Kiski Area and Burrell Area high schools and The Kiski School in Westmoreland County. Vocational students, GED students and those attending parochial, charter and private schools also are eligible.

Students must have a 2.5 or higher grade-point average and must complete an essay highlighting their community/school service.

All are welcome to join the men and women at Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) who are learning how to lose weight.

With in-person meetings, rewards, support and encouragement, we gain knowledge of healthy eating and exercise.
