Golfers weren’t the only ones dressed for success on the links at Oakmont Country Club on Friday.
Spectators displayed their fashion sense while walking outside the ropes among the thousands of fans during the second round of the U.S. Open championship.
Allison Apke of Chicago was wearing a sweater with the word “Golf” on it and a skirt from Golftini, a women-owned golf apparel company.
When a business trip had to her scheduled to be in Pittsburgh this week, she took the opportunity to see the best golfers in the world. She said she loves golf and considers it also a good way interact with clients. She chose an outfit that was both cute and comfortable.
“It is so nice to see women get into golf,” Apke said.
Dressing for the event was important, said Bryson and Lana Hammond of Kentucky and Geri and Gregg DeFilippi of Oakmont. The four friends attended the practice round on Wednesday and each purchased an outfit to wear Friday. They wanted to go to the merchandise tent early in the week to make sure they had a nice selection to choose from. On Thursday, the DeFilippis hosted a champagne social where all guests wore U.S. Open apparel.
“It was so much fun,” Geri DeFilippi said.
The temperature reached the low 80s on Friday. Jazlyn Segura of Weslaco, Texas, said when choosing her outfit she went with function and fashion.
“I wanted something breathable, and I love linen,” said Segura, who also wore a pair of Krewe sunglasses and a new U.S. Open wide-brim hat she purchased at one of the United States Golf Association shops on site.
Also doing some shopping were the family of amateur competitor Lance Simpson. All from Knoxville, Tenn., they included his mother, Kelly Simpson; his sister, Brooke Simpson; and his girlfriend, Iris Putnam. They all wore summery outfits.
They said they wanted to be well-dressed because golfers always look good on the course and they wanted to show support for Simpson, whose dream has been to play at Oakmont Country Club.
Inspired by styles they’ve seen at the Masters at Augusta National in Georgia, Sarah Lynch, who grew up in Bethel Park and lives in Atlanta, walked the course with her daughter, Olivia.
“Golf fashion is about a classic look,” said Olivia, who wore a floral jumper.
“Golf is a sport where the players and fans respect the fashion,” said Sarah Lynch, a golfer whose outfit Friday was suitable for playing, including golf shoes and a wide brim hat. “It’s about respecting the game.”
