John E. Shaffer, Sr., 95, a lifelong resident of Donegal, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at his home with his loving family by his side. He was born on Oct. 14, 1928, in Donegal, the son of the late Lury W. and Irene Roadman Shaffer. John was the owner of the Exxon Gas Station in Donegal for 25 years. He was also part owner of Shaffer Chevrolet in Donegal, part owner of Shaffer Run Trout Hatchery in Bakersville and Bucksnort, Tennessee, and an honorary member of the LHTC (Laurel Highlands Telephone Company). John was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Donegal. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. John loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter. John will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his loving family, his son, Terry (Joan) Shaffer of Jones Mills; his daughter-in-law, Brenda Shaffer (Roger) Neiderhiser of Champion; his grandchildren, Nicole Myers, Jenny Shaffer, Amy Benning (Ted), and Lee Shaffer; his great-grandchildren, Hannah Shaffer, Porter Myers, Lena Earnest, Claire Benning, William Benning, and Sloane Myers; his sisters, Ella Mae (Forrest) Kastner of Mt. Pleasant and Audrey Soforic of Mt. Pleasant; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine Newill Shaffer; his son, John E. Shaffer, Jr.; and his siblings, Betty Hoke, Don Shaffer, Walt Shaffer, Robert Shaffer, L.W. "Steve" Shaffer, Jr., Clair "Curly" Shaffer, Paul Shaffer, Lawrence "Skid" Shaffer, Phyllis Groppel, Mid Brady, and Nancy Shaffer. The family would like to give a special thanks to Independence Hospice and John's caregivers Rose, June, and Kandy for all of the wonderful care given to John during his illness. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service to be held Monday, April 8, at 11 a.m., in the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 194 Main St., Donegal, PA 15628, with Pastor Keith Deckinger officiating. A committal service and interment will follow in the Donegal Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Donegal VFW and American Legion Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Mt.
