Shaler co-indoor track and field coach Shawn Ryan knows track during the winter can get monotonous.

With a lot of snow in the forecast, it’s had to get much practice time in. Despite the lack of track-related activities, the Titans made a big splash during their first meet of the year at Youngstown State University.

Ryan Peterson, Antonio DiTomasso, Mark Povich and Garrett Grazier teamed to break the school record in the 800 relay in a time of 1 minute, 36.68 seconds. Shaler placed sixth at the event.

“The kids are excited,” Ryan said. “Three of the four kids are back from last season. Antonio DiTomasso stepped in. He worked hard in the preseason. He was a cross country runner in middle school and started sprinting about midway through his high school career.”

Ryan said there will be a lot of competition for spots on that relay team.

Liam Kelley also had a big day for Shaler. He hit the top 10 in school history in three different events. Kelley grabbed the second spot in the long jump with a leap of 21-3 3/4, while he earned the No. 4 mark in the triple jump with a distance of 41-4 and a third-place mark in the school’s history books with a jump of 5-8.

Kelley picked up the triple jump last spring and ended up qualifying for the WPIAL championships.

“He’s reached the performance level where he is optimistic he could qualify for states,” Ryan said. “Right now, since indoor track isn’t sponsored by the PIAA, he is competing against kids from 2A and 3A. His distance in the long jump was the 18th best in the state, but that can change daily.”

In addition to Kelley and the relay team, there were several other athletes who reached the top 10 in Shaler’s record books. Ryan Peterson reached the No. 10 spot in the 200 meters with a time of 24.69 seconds.

Tommy Podgorski grabbed the third spot in the all-time 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:11.32, Logan Messina finished the 1,600 in 5:02.02 to hold the second spot, and Hannah Sahr earned the sixth spot in the 200 meters with a run of 28.36.

Liberty Paladin threw the shot put 32-10 1/4 to move into fourth place on the school’s all-time list. Jayla Antomachi finished fourth at Youngstown State with a throw of 35-9 3/4 in the shot put. Antomachi already held the Titans’ school record with a throw of 36-11 last season.
