Medicap Pharmacy, a longtime Millvale enterprise, was named the “most transformed” pharmacy of 2024 by the Flip the Pharmacy organization.
The organization, which focuses on steering pharmacies toward more clinical care rather than solely filling prescriptions, awarded Medicap for several recent changes in care options.
Elaine Trapani, who started the franchise location in 1989, said her pharmacy recently began offering immunization clinics for influenza and covid-19.
She said those offerings are in addition to new medication therapy management services, through which pharmacists can help customers better manage their drug regimens. Trapani said Medicap also began working with patrons on medication synchronization so they can pick up multiple prescriptions at one time.
Her goal from the start, she said, has been to “take care of customers,” and the recent changes allow her to become more involved in patient care. But she said she appreciated the recognition from Flip the Pharmacy.
“I have the award displayed at the store, and every day I look at it and I say, ‘Wow,’ ” Trapani said.
Through the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Care Network, which collaborates with Flip the Pharmacy, Akshaya Sudhakar began serving as an intern at Medicap.
Trapani said the fourth-year Pitt pharmacy student has been “instrumental” in implementing the new services.
Though she was “excited” when Medicap was recognized, Sudhakar said the more “gratifying” thing has been seeing the changes themselves. Starting as an intern in 2023 and now receiving the award, she said, has felt “full circle.”
