Two men were rescued after their car crashed into a creek Sunday morning in Etna, Mayor Robert Tunon said.

The crash happened on Crescent Street near Grant Avenue around 11:30 a.m.

According to Tunon, the men were traveling down Grant Avenue toward Crescent when their car left its lane, crossed the oncoming lane, hit a metal pipe in the ground and landed upright on its wheels in Pine Creek, between the road bridge and a railroad bridge.

No other vehicles were involved.

An Etna police officer was the first to arrive on the scene and got life vests to the two men, who got out of their vehicle through its sunroof, Tunon said.

Four members of the swift water rescue team at Cherry City Volunteer Fire Department responded along with Etna volunteer firefighters. Together, they got the men from their car to a ladder and out of the creek channel, Tunon said.

They were treated at the scene by Shaler Hampton EMS and taken to hospital with minor injuries, Tunon said.

A crew from Ferra’s Automotive Services, with help from the swift water rescue team, was able to remove the car from the creek without damaging either the Crescent Avenue road bridge or the nearby railroad bridge, Tunon said.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known and is under investigation, Tunon said.

Tunon expressed gratitude to the first responders and their professionalism.

“I’m incredibly proud of the Etna Volunteer Fire Department, our police department, our fire police and grateful for responding neighbors like the Cherry City team for completing this rescue and removing the vehicle from our creek,” he said.
