Notice to patrons
The Millvale Community Library, 213 Grant Ave., will be closed July 4 and 5 for Independence Day. The library is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Regular operating hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Adults invited to join Maker Meetups
The Millvale Community Library offers Maker Meetups for patrons 18 and older during the summer.
The next meetups will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 10 and Aug. 14.
Attendees can bring their projects to work on and chat with other creatives.
Community fridge, pantry open to all
The Millvale Free Fridge is a community fridge located on the deck behind the Millvale Community Library.
The Millvale Free Pantry recently moved to the same location behind the library. Both are accessible to the public 24 hours a day.
The fridge is stocked with fresh and frozen groceries and meals from community members, as well as local food partners including 412 Food Rescue, the Gardens of Millvale, Sprezzatura, Lemon Tree Coffee, Abielle Voyante Tea Co. and more.
The fridge and pantry aim to promote food security and reduce food waste. The pantry also is stocked with hygiene and personal care products.
Residents who would like to contribute financially to the fridge and pantry fund can do so online at givebutter.com/MCLCommunityFoodResources.

Lunches served to children during summer
Millvale Community Library’s “Color Our World” summer reading program is in full swing and runs through Aug. 2. Stop by the library to register.
As part of the summer offerings for school-aged youths, the library also is serving free lunches from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays every week through Aug. 15. There will be no lunch on Friday, July 4, because the library will be closed for the holiday.
Free yoga classes offered on Thursdays
Free summer yoga classes are now in session at 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 28 in the back yard of Millvale Community Library.
The 45-minute class offers gentle and relaxing movement for all bodies and abilities. No prior experience or flexibility is required.
Bring a mat or towel.
Music lessons available for all ages at no cost
You Be You Inc. offers free music lessons for all ages at the library:
• Grown-up and Me Music: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Tuesday in the community room. This free music and movement class is geared toward infants through age 4 with a caregiver. Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is advised at youbeyouinc.com.
• Tween Guitar: 4 to 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday in the backyard/deck area. These free guitar lessons are geared toward children 8 to 12. Students do not need experience, and several guitars are available. The program is funded by the Grable Foundation as part of You Be You’s Neighborhood Empowerment Music Project. Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is advised at youbeyouinc.com.
• Adult Guitar Lessons: 6 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday in the community room. Walk-ins are welcome, but registration is advised at youbeyouinc.com.

Upcoming programs
• Tail Waggin’ Tutors (Therapy Dogs): 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 26, Aug. 30, Sept. 27, Oct. 25 and Nov. 29. Children in kindergarten and up are encouraged to sign up for a 15-minute session to read to their favorite therapy dog on the last Saturday of every month. To give more youngsters an opportunity to read, registration is required, and a child may register for up to two sessions. You can sign up for more if slots are still open on program day. • Telling Tales: The Art of Storytelling (for adults): 6:30 p.m. July 1. There are lots of ways to tell stories. You will find what suits you as we explore and learn about storytelling. Listen, learn and share at this evening for adults. Most everyone has a story to share. Register 24 hours before the class if you would like the link to attend via Zoom.
• Happy Little Canvases (grades K-3): 1 to 2 p.m. July 5 and Aug. 2. If you like painting with friends, come join Miss Libby for painting sessions with fun themes. Bring an old T-shirt and your imagination. Registration is required.

• Design-Build-Engineer Adventure: 1 to 4 p.m. July 10 and 11. This hands-on experience is for children entering fifth through eighth grades. Students should attend both days. Participants will learn how engineers dream up creative and practical solutions to improve the world. Snacks will be served. Attendance is limited to 30 children, and the deadline to register is July 8.
• Family Bingo: Super Mario!: 1 to 2 p.m. July 12. Join us for a monthly bingo with one of today’s most popular cartoon characters. It’s held on the second Saturday of each month and includes prizes and fun for the whole family. Mark your calendars: The Aug. 9 theme is Shark Edition. Children 8 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.
• Kick-off to Kindergarten: 10:15 to 11 a.m. every Thursday through Aug. 7. These sessions will help children entering kindergarten be confident, inspired and ready for school. Registration is required.
• Make a Fairy Garden With the Shaler Garden Club: 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1. This workshop is open to young children and their families. Following a story about fairy houses, youngsters will be able to build their own houses on the library grounds using natural materials gathered by garden club members. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is encouraged.

All ages welcome to Star Party
Gaze at the stars with members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh starting at 9 p.m. July 11 until midnight in Denny Park, off Anderson Road.
This event is for all ages, and registration is encouraged in case of rain.
Members of the AAAP will be available to guide you through an evening of telescopic wonders and celestial discoveries. Seasoned stargazers and curious beginners are welcome to explore the cosmos and ask questions during this free event for all ages.
Attendees also will have a chance to enter a raffle to win a telescope.
Bring lawn chairs, snacks and your own telescope if you like.
Fun fact: Did you know the library has a telescope that you can borrow with your card? Stop by the library and ask a librarian about it!
Honor students to lead Japan-A-Palooza for kids
Students entering grades 4-6 are invited to a six-week summer adventure showcasing Japan.
Japan-A-Palooza will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday through July 31.
Explore the wonders of the “Land of the Rising Sun” with members of Shaler Area High School’s Japanese National Honor Society.
There will be crafts, stories and lessons on Japanese culture, language, music, food, characters, festivals and more.

Free storytelling offered at Kiwanis Park, Etna pool
Miss Jill and Miss Ing and their musical friends will present stories and songs from 2 to 2:45 p.m. every Tuesday through July 29 in Kiwanis Park.
They also will be at the Etna Pool and Playground from 1 to 1:45 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 7. Summer lunches will be served from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the pool/park for children 18 and younger, thanks to North Hills Cares and the Etna Community Organization.
Youngsters also can grab a free book to keep.
Both programs are open to all ages, but children younger than 6 must be accompanied by an adult.
No registration is required for the programs.
Community artwork on display until July 25
The Shaler North Hills Library’s Community Showcase Art Show is now on display in the library’s upstairs Community Room from May 16 through July 25 during regular library hours.
Featured Local Businesses
The theme is “Celebrate Your Community” and features works in a variety of mediums by artists of all ages.
A closing reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. July 25.
