The top girls golfers in the district are set to close the door on September scholastic action with the final round of the 2024 WPIAL Class 3A and 2A girls golf individual championships.
In Class 3A, Peters Township junior Ellie Benson has a three-stroke lead heading into the final 18 holes. Benson shot a 3-over-par 75 in the first round last Monday at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo.
Pine-Richland sophomore Siena Smith is in second place, three strokes back after shooting a 6-over 78.

There will be 29 golfers participating in the final round, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Butler Country Club in Butler.
In Class 2A, Eden Christian Academy junior Pearl Lundgren heads into the final round with an eight-stroke advantage after shooting an impressive 3-over-par 75 in the first round last Monday, also at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo.
The closest challenger is Shady Side Academy freshman Alyssa Zhang, who shot an 11-over 83 in the opening round.

Girls soccer showdowns
Monday marks the start of the final two weeks of the WPIAL girls soccer regular season.
Upcoming Local Events
One section where the top spot is up for grabs is in Section 4-2A when Mt. Pleasant visits Deer Lakes.
The Vikings are alone in first place with a perfect 6-0 section record and 10-1 overall. They have outscored their 11 opponents this season, 64-5.
The Lancers are a game back at 5-1 in the section and 7-2-2 overall.
Deer Lakes has won five straight matches since losing at Mt. Pleasant on Sept. 9, 5-0.
In Section 3-4A, the two teams chasing front running Seneca Valley (6-0, 8-2-1) collide on Monday when Pine-Richland (7-3) visits North Allegheny (7-5).
The Rams are 5-1 in the section and currently in second place, one game behind the Raiders and one game ahead of the Tigers at 4-2.
Pine-Richland edged North Allegheny on Sept. 9, 1-0.

As close as it gets
A key boys soccer Section 1-2A match Monday will finally bring some separation to two teams deadlocked for first place, unless of course the showdown ends in an overtime tie.
The 2022 WPIAL 2A champion, Deer Lakes, battles North Catholic for the top spot at J.C. Stone Field in North Park.
Both the Lancers and Trojans are 7-1 in the section, both are 9-2 overall this season, and both have yielded five goals in eight section games and only nine goals overall this season.
The only difference record-wise is Deer Lakes has also played to a tie in nonsection play.
The Lancers have won three in a row and are unbeaten in their last six games (5-0-1).
The Trojans have won eight straight since losing 1-0 at Deer Lakes on Aug. 25.
