It may be October, but not every activity has to be about the fall season. Between football games, pumpkin carving and Halloween costume selection, maybe you need a break! Here are a few things to do in Pittsburgh this weekend.

Dormont Street and Music Festival

Take a stroll through Dormont this Saturday to hear live music on three stages throughout the day. Potomac Avenue will be shut down for the occasion. Local musicians in a variety of genres will fill the day with music — there will even be a full lineup of acoustic acts.

Tunes will play from 1 to 8 p.m. There will also be a kids’ zone from 1 to 5 p.m. with a variety of activities — including a visit from the Dormont Fire Department’s fire truck. Food, local beer and craft vendors will be set up to provide attendees with treats and cool items as they meander and enjoy the music.

Festival of Combustion

Taking place at the Carrie Blast Furnace, the Festival of Combustion celebrates makers of all things big and bright. From 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, a whole-day iron pour at the blast furnace will centerpiece this unique festival.

There will also be demonstrations from smiths of many kinds, including blacksmiths and glassblowers. Makers will also get to sell their crafts at a marketplace. Tours of the blast furnace will be open, and food trucks, craft beer and live music will round out the day’s fun.

North Side Art Factory Art Festival

On Saturday, acclaimed mural artists will transform Virgin Way on Pittsburgh’s North Side into a public art gallery with the painting of a series of murals. From 3 to 6 p.m., a festival will be held during this revitalization project that is free and open to the public.

Spectators will get to see the live transformation of the public space while eating delicious food from local vendors and enjoying a performance by drumline band Timbaleeza, which will perform at 3:30 p.m.

The Beatles at the PSO

Sixty years after the Fab Four’s only concert in Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will play a program of Beatles tunes this weekend.

Showcasing hits including “Love Me Do” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” the program will bring in three guest vocalists to sing these timeless classics, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra. It will be a multi-sensory experience, too, with a series of historical photos projected in the background.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Heinz Hall. Before the Friday and Saturday evening performances, WYEP’s Beatles expert Mike Sauter will share rare insights into two Beatles songs, starting at 6:30 p.m. Grab your tickets at pittsburghsymphony.org.

Oktoberfest vibes continue with the Olde Frothingslosh Fall Fest Beer Collectibles Show this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Home Economics Building in South Park Township.
