Pittsburgh police have arrested a West End man in the fatal shooting last month of his 22-year-old friend and neighbor.
Lontae Smith was shot March 25 in the 1400 block of Harlow Street, where he lived, in Pittsburgh’s Chartiers City neighborhood.
Police responded after an alert at 9:54 p.m. by the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system. Smith’s father drove him to the hospital, where he died at 10:31 p.m., police said.
On the way to the hospital, Smith said that his friend Sincere Kimbrough had shot him, the father told police, according to a criminal complaint.
The two had been friends for more than 10 years, police said.
A doorbell camera showed Kimbrough leaving his home a few minutes before the shooting and getting into Smith’s car, a dark gray Nissan Altima that was parked on Harlow Street, police said. Smith was shot near the vehicle, leaving blood on the front passenger seat and outside the car, police said.
Police on Wednesday charged Kimbrough with homicide and carrying a firearm without a license. A judge Thursday denied him bail.
About two hours after the shooting, Kimbrough approached two Pittsburgh police officers at the crime scene and told them he lived nearby, police said. Kimbrough said that he was working out and playing football at the time of the shooting, according to the complaint.
Police didn’t mention a motive for the shooting in the complaint.
Kimbrough’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 8. His attorney was not listed.
