Irma Chovanec, 100, of Yukon, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving caregivers. She was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Yukon, PA. Daughter of the late Lucas A. and Mary J. (Frinak) Chovanec. She graduated from South Huntingdon High School Class of 1961, and played the clarinet in the band. She then attended Westmoreland County Community College where she received her Business Degree in 1963. She was very smart, quick with mathematics and was versed in Latin after four years of study. She worked and retired from Walworth as a secretary in the accounting department, back then known as a 'traffic girl'. She started at the bottom and worked her way to the top. She was a lifetime member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Yukon, PA and was in the choir for many years. She attended Sunday mass faithfully whenever possible. Irma enjoyed going to the casino and using her gambling machine at home. She liked helping bake chocolate chip cookies with Ruby, playing board games, listening to music and watching 'Shark Tank' and 'America's Funniest Home Videos' on television. She loved to laugh and found it to be the key to happiness. She was always very thankful and loved having visitors enjoy a meal with her. Irma was very devoted to her family and helping raise her siblings, even helping put some of them through college. She loved her mother and enjoyed reminiscing of past times with her friends. She took care of everyone. In her younger years, she enjoyed going polka dancing at the Slovenian Hall in Yukon, PA. She enjoyed a birthday celebration with a Yukon fire truck parade in honor of her 100th year. It was her best birthday ever! Irma always said you need to laugh at yourself, laugh with friends and family and laugh at life. It's better to laugh than cry. She is preceded in death by both parents, one infant brother; three brothers, Edward, L. Ruben and Gerald F. Chovanec; four sisters, Eleanor Wheeler, Mary J. Horne, Helen Auer and Ethel Skerlec.
