A slain teen found 27 years ago in a Wilkinsburg basement has been identified with the help of DNA technology.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday morning announced it had identified the body as that of Genelle Bradford, who was reported missing from the Wilkinsburg area on April 24, 1999.
She was 18.
Allegheny County Police and Wilkinsburg police worked for decades to identify the remains, which were discovered on June 28, 1999, at 604 North Ave. more than a year after the home was abandoned, officials said.
Investigators knew the basics: “Jane Doe” was a Black woman who stood about 5-foot-5 and was between 18 and 20 years old, officials said. She had been strangled and her death was ruled a homicide.
A state grant in 2024 paired the medical examiner’s office with genetic genealogy company Othram, which uses modern DNA tools to identify human remains from cold cases. The two groups tackled “more than a dozen local cases,” officials said.
The project led Allegheny County earlier this year to solve its longest cold case for an unidentified victim.
The medical examiner in February announced the body of an unknown homicide victim discovered over 30 years ago — described as a 5-foot-10 white male, weighing 175 pounds — was identified as that of Allan Keener.
Othram, based in Houston, said it used DNA from the victim to build a genetic profile and narrow down possible matching individuals. Keener’s surviving family members declined comment at the time.
Staff in the medical examiner’s office said Tuesday they “are thrilled” the partnership has led to a second identification.
“While the focus now shifts towards finding justice for Genelle, we are hopeful we can continue to provide answers for those impacted by the remaining cold cases we have shared with Othram,” said Mandy Tinkey, director of forensic services at the medical examiner’s office.
“This technology is testament to why we never stop investigating open cases,” Allegheny County Police Superintendent Christopher Kearns added. “Now that Genelle has been formally identified, we will continue to follow every lead available to us in the hopes of getting answers for her family.”
Police have reported no suspects in Genelle’s death. Anyone with information should contact the County Police Tip Line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.
