Laurel NURSERY GARDEN CENTER De Lawn Food 36 Wow, how time flies. Where did the last 50 years go? John Heese started at Latrobe Steel in 1967. While working there, he decided to start trimming trees and landscaping on the side. Opening a garden center seemed to provide a ready supply of trees and shrubs for his landscape jobs as well as the opportunity to share his love of gardening in the area. John and Joyce Heese opened in March of 1974 with one acre of retail space and a 2400 square foot building. Quality greenhouse product availability has always been a struggle. In order to combat that, John and Joyce decided to start growing annuals. fall mums and poinsettias. They started with a 2000 square foot greenhouse and over the years that expanded into currently 9 production greenhouses. Laurel Nusery is known for it's beautiful hanging baskets in the spring, amazing fall mums and beautiful poinsettias at Christmas. Their oldest son, Ken, graduated in 1988 from The Ohio State University with a degree in Nursery Management. The following year, the sales area was expanded from one acre to three acres and their biggest production greenhouse was built. Having multiple requests for houseplants and tropicals, the Heese family decided in 1990 to build a 3000 square foot greenhouse attached to the main store. That has proved to be a great decision with the popularity of indoor plants over the years. In 1994, Ken's wife, Patty, joins the team. The store was expanded to include gardening gifts, flags, rugs, windchimes and eventually a boutique.
