Cheri Croney isn’t about to let the violence that killed her husband overshadow his life and legacy. Croney is planning a vigil Sunday evening and a scholarship in honor of her husband, Kevin J. Croney, 43, of Allegheny Township, who she buried Wednesday after he was shot in his New Kensington tattoo studio last week. She is helping to find a replacement for her husband in a Shadyside plastic surgeon’s office where Croney tattooed the reconstructed breasts of women recovering from breast cancer. “He was really proud of his work,â€? said Croney. In the spirit of the family’s belief in the importance of giving, Croney on Thursday delivered meals to homeless people in Pittsburgh with the food that friends and relatives bestowed on the family. She packed up the food and drove the streets of Pittsburgh, looking for and finding homeless people who needed a free meal. “You can either fall apart or rise above,â€? Croney said. “I don’t want anybody to be angry. That keeps the violence alive. We have to continue on and I want to show my family and friends that we can do this. It’s important so that when my kids, or anybody, has to face something tragic, they know that they can get through.â€? A vice president of a Kiski Area School District parent-teacher organization, Croney plans to develop a scholarship in her husband’s name for Kiski students interested in art, photography or graphic arts. Her husband was a Pittsburgh Arts Institute graduate. “I don’t ever want the name Kevin Croney to ever be forgotten,â€? she said. Croney said Friday that she wants to carry on not only her husband’s spirit but his work. She re-opened his longtime tattoo studio, True Image Tattoo on Freeport Street, on Thursday. She will hold a public vigil at the studio 8 p.m. Sunday. “We’re a family and we have an amazing customer base that come from all over,â€? she said. A new tattoo designed in her husband’s Kevin’s honor is in the works, she added. For Sunday’s vigil, Croney said, “I just want everybody to be there for what will be almost a blessing of the place so it is not tarnished by what happened there.â€? Kevin Croney was shot when he was at his studio on March 13. According to police, he argued with Christopher S. Patterson, 44, of Vandergrift, who pulled a gun and shot Croney at point-blank range. Patterson is lodged in the Westmoreland County jail, facing a homicide charge. Staff writer Tom Yerace contributed. Mary Ann Thomas is a staff writer for Trib Total Media.
