Shaler commissioners haven’t ruled out opening Crawford Pool for the summer but they have decided to refund residents who purchased season passes. “We anticipate, and are still making plans, to open (the pool) once Allegheny County is moved to the Green Phase,” Manager Tim Rogers posted to social media. “However, we do not know when that will be.” The board last month said a decision whether to open the pool would be based on direction from Allegheny County and Gov. Tom Wolf. Despite moving into the state’s yellow phase of reopening on May 15, guidance from the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society doesn’t allow pools and community events to open in time for typical Memorial Day celebrations. Movies in the Park also are on hold. People who purchased swim lessons at Crawford Pool also will be reimbursed. Commissioners met Tuesday night and said they are still considering July 4th/Community Day festivities. An update will be provided as decisions are made. Crawford Pool, which sits along Meyer Road, is a busy spot for swim lessons, adult water aerobics and competitions by the Sea Dogs swim team. The board said memberships will be sold if they vote to reopen the pool in early summer, and people who purchased them originally at a discounted rate will get that same slashed price. If the opening is later in the summer, the pool might sell day passes for township residents only. Across the area, pool boards are weighing the costs of a delayed opening, with some already making the decision to remain closed. Allegheny County announced on May 15 that its pools and spray parks will not open this summer. The county Parks Department blamed ongoing restrictions regarding mass gatherings under the covid-19 pandemic for the closures, which include Boyce Park Wave Pool, Deer Lakes Spray Park and North Park Swimming Pool. Others, like two in Penn Hills, have decided to open and set a tentative nonspecific date for that to happen in June. Have news to share?
