Here are some of the latest news items from this morning, Friday, April 12:
Rescue crews save woman trapped in car in flood waters
A woman was rescued from her vehicle by Swiftwater Rescue Paramedics Thursday night after getting stuck in flood waters in Brookline.
Emergency crews were called to Saw Mill Run Boulevard around 9 p.m. Water rescue paramedics deployed their boat to get the woman out of her car.
Pittsburgh Public Safety said that she was not hurt.
The woman was one of multiple rescues Thursday night after the weather service issued a flash flood emergency for southwest Allegheny County, including Oakdale and Coraopolis, and northern Washington County.
Water rescues from vehicles and homes were ongoing after more than 4 inches of rain had fallen, the service reported on social media.
National Weather Service releases statistics for Pittsburgh rain
The National Weather Service has begun posting statistics from Thursday night’s “record shattering” rain.
Thursday’s rain reached almost three inches, doubling the previous daily record from 1933. They have also named Thursday as the 25th “wettest day,” a record that hasn’t been broken since 1871. They said that this has been the most rain that any month on record in Pittsburgh has received in the first 11 days.
Pittsburgh has already received over six inches of rain above what is considered normal for April. Only halfway through the month, it is already considered the third wettest April on record and the weather service predicts that it will be the first by the end of the month. It’s also the first time that the first and second greatest daily rainfall for a month have occurred in the same year.
Missing child found safe
A missing boy was found safe last night, according to Pittsburgh police.
Special victims unit detectives were searching for Keshawn Jones, 11, after he was last seen leaving his home in the 1000 block of Herron Avenue after school on Thursday. He was considered at risk because of his age and the inclement weather.
