Wilmer F. Shaner, 93, of Vandergrift, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024, in Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Cabot. Born April 22, 1931, in Leechburg, he was a son of the late Norman Shaner and Dorothy (Summerville) Shaner. Wilmer was a 1951 graduate of Leechburg High School, and lived in Vandergrift since 1952. He served our country with the United States Army during the Korean War. Wilmer worked as a roller at Allegheny Ludlum in West Leechburg for 43 years, retiring in 1994. He worked part-time as a bricklayer with Pisone Brothers. Wilmer was a proud member of St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church, where he was an altar server at funeral Masses, a charter member of the Men's Club, and was involved with the remodeling of the church. He was a member of the Vandergrift Fire Company No.2, where Wilmer was Fireman of the Year on several occasions. He was also a member of the Western PA Fireman's Association, and its Hi-Hatters group. Additional memberships include the Old Timers, where he was past president, and the Bari Club. Wilmer loved his wine and spirits, and enjoyed gardening, and brick laying. He was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan. In addition to his parents, Wilmer was preceded in death by his sisters, Norma Kummick, Donna Smail; and his nephews, Dr. Robert Kreashko, and Gregory Shaner. Wilmer is survived by his wife of 73 years, Raffelina C. (Savastano) Shaner; daughter, Vicki M. (Joseph) Azzarone of Gilpin Township; sons, Michael A. (Kathy) Shaner of Naples, FL, James L. (Michele) Shaner of Cecil, PA; grandchildren, Joseph (Holly) Stone, Jr., Alexandra (Anthony) Corso, Mitchel (Lia) Shaner, Michael Shaner, Jr., Joclyn Shaner; great-grandchildren, Giuseppe, Mila, Avalina, Anthony, III; brother, Paul Shaner of Hyde Park; sister, Violet Stivason of Leechburg; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, 2024, in the BRADY-CURRAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 429 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift. Firemen's service will be at 7:30 p.m. Additional viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m until the time of parting prayers at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m., in St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church, 303 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift, with Father Michael Sciberrras as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell, with full military honors accorded by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard.
